Mattress Recycling

How Does It Work?

Step 1: Your mattress is collected and brought to our mattress recycling facility, then responsibly deconstructed.

Step 2: Foam padding is turned into carpet underlay and animal bed padding.

Step 3: Springs are recycled as metal scrap and used in appliances in construction components.

Step 4: Fibres are removed and applied to textile applications, including industrial oil filters.

Step 5: Wooden frames are turned into gardening mulch and new energy products.

Who do we work with?

Usel is Northern Ireland’s only mattress recycling provider diverting over 1000 tonnes of waste from landfill every year.

  • Usel collect mattresses from council recycling centres, bed retailers and hoteliers across the province and brings them back to our licenced facility. 100% of mattresses collected are diverted from landfill.

  • The mattresses are disassembled into various components. These components are segregated and sent on to other facilities for further processing and reused in several different ways such as carpet underlay, acoustic dampening in cars and the steel spring is sent to a local metal recycler to be melted down for reuse. 96% of each mattress is recycled, the remaining 4% is sent to energy from waste.

  • Usel is the only organisation in Northern Ireland to provide this service. The benefits of mattress recycling include reducing waste, driving greater resource productivity, and significantly reducing the environmental impact of mattress disposal. In addition, Usel is creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities and health related conditions within its recycling operation.

Do we recycle your mattress?

Yes. In fact, we recycle each part of your old mattress individually so that everything is correctly recycled. Each layer is stripped away to ensure there’s no mixing of materials.

In our efforts to create a sustainable future, we’re constantly working on innovative new uses for each part of your mattress. This also allows us to put these recycled materials to best use.

How much will it cost?

A charge of £42 applies to each mattress we recycle.
